      Re: Tactical vs Strategic

Good point - I look at strategic being 3-5 years out and tactical being more short term like a year.

We do a one year budget and then look out over three years we think looking at 5 years is a waste of time

I have to admit as a small business we do not spend as much time as we should planning and when we do it is usually a tactical discussion

            Re: Tactical vs Strategic

Here's how I look at it. (this is from something I wrote a while ago).

Business planning is about finding, describing, and refining the competitive advantage of your business. When you create a plan and system to monitor your results, it's important to consider the "trees" and the "forest." Most people are either detail-oriented (tree people) or visionaries (forest people). Yet to do business right, business must be looked at from several perspectives. With our Strategic Planning Products, we'll help you create a comprehensive system that covers the three essential types of planning:

Strategic planning helps you create the critical short- and long-term goals that help you move ahead faster.

Tactical planning helps you implement your strategies and make sure that all the pieces of your business are in alignment. I'll be by your side critiquing what you're working on, as well as providing resources and connections to others who can help you.

Operational planning helps you systematize routine operational tasks and long-term projects. You create systems and marketing materials that are so flexible you're bound to think of countless other ways to use them.

              Re: Tactical vs Strategic

well i think inorder to be a great business rather than a good business you should try to emprovise both. tactical is moving in an effecient manner, and strategic is actual mythodical thinking to plan for an action.

I hate to admit this but we are much more tactically inclined we never seem to sit down and think of the big picture

                  Re: Tactical vs Strategic

well it all depends upon the kind of situation i am handling:

                  Strategic planning includes areas like
                  (i) business’ market share
                  (ii) professional career path
                  (iii) life and/or business vision
                  (iv) investment goals
                  (v) personal and/or professional opportunity costs
                  (vi) mission
                  (vii) the allocation of resources.

On the other hand, areas that are covered in tactical planning include :

                  (i) monthly or quarterly sales goals
(ii) improving customer service in specific areas
(iii) reducing the number of your outside commitments so that you can simplify your life
(iv) creating action plans for your strategic (big picture) objectives.

                      Hello Friends....

                      Tactical:
                      Get links.

                      Strategic:
Avoid actively seeking low quality links until your site has a significant history which includes many trusted backlinks.

                      Tactical:
                      Get quality links.

                      Strategic:
Create content, tools, or other packaged value systems which allow you to gain high quality viral links for a low aggregate cost. Create things that will make competitors want to talk about you.

                      Thanks

                        Re: Tactical vs Strategic

The difference between strategy and tactics is that strategy defines "what" is to be done but tactics defines the "how". Tactical Management focuses on one or a series of tasks and activities involved in executing an overall strategy. Strategic Management is focused on establishing the end goal in mind.

                          Re: Tactical vs Strategic

                          # Shadow someone with a reputation for being strategic. This could be your mentor or someone he/she recommends. Try to participate in a situation that allows you to observe this person "being strategic." Interview him/her before the event to understand the thought process, alternatives considered, and the game plan for the situation. Watch and listen carefully to what he/she says and does in the situation. Afterwards, debrief what was going on. Your goal: to get inside the person's head and learn to think like a strategic person thinks.

                            Re: Tactical vs Strategic

                            Hi

                            1. Since upper managers generally have a better understanding of the organization as a whole than lower level managers do, upper management generally develops the strategic plans and because lower level managers generally have better understanding of the day to day organizational operations, generally the lower level managers develop the tactical plans.

                            2. Because Strategic Planning emphasizes analyzing the future and tactical planning emphasizes analysing the everyday functioning of the organization, facts on which to base strategic plans are usually more difficult to gather than are facts on which to base tactical plans.

                            3. Because strategic plans are based primarily on a prediction of the future and tactical plans on known circumstances that exist within the organization, strategic plans are generally less detailed than tactical plans.

                            4. Because strategic planning focuses on the long term and tactical planning on the short term, strategic plans cover a relatively long period of time whereas tactical plans cover a relatively short period of time.

                            Thanks
