    That depends on what type of graphics you design. Are you into professional type designs/banners, do you do cartoonish designs, etc. There are lots of forums out there where you can post what you do and look for people needing a designer. You need to figure out things you cando and what styles you are comfortable with, then push them. Get a nice site setup showing as much of what you can do as possible and promote.

      Start by make a list of people who have a need that your benefit fulfills. Next think about who is most likely to buy it, and what demographics they fall under; including what they do for a living if that would require your services, what their age group is (that will affect what styles they would appreciate), and their location. Once you can figure that out, you need to see if there is enough of a demand for it inorder to be successful.

        With a clearly defined target audience, it is much easier to determine where and how to market your company. Here are some tips to help you define your target market.
        1. Look at your current customer base
        Who are your current customers, and why do they buy from you? Look for common characteristics and interests. Which ones bring in the most business? It is very likely that other people like them could also benefit from your product/service.
        2. Check out your competition
        Who are your competitors targeting? Who are their current customers? Don’t go after the same market. You may find a niche market that they are overlooking.
        3. Analyze your product/service
        Write out a list of each feature of your product or service. Next to each feature, list the benefits they provide (and the benefits of those benefits). For example, a graphic designer offers high quality design services. The resulting benefit is a professional company image. A professional image will attract more customers because they see the company as professional and trustworthy. So ultimately, the benefit of high quality design is to gain more customers and make more money.
        Once you have your benefits listed, make a list of people who have a need that your benefit fulfills. For example, a graphic designer could choose to target businesses interested in increasing their client base. While this is still too general, you now have a base to start from.
        4. Choose specific demographics to target
        Figure out not only who has a need for your product or service, but also who is most likely to buy it. Think about the following factors:
        Age
        Location
        Gender
        Income level
        Education level
        Marital or family status
        Occupation
        Ethnic background
        5. Consider the psychographics of your target
        Psychographics are more personal characteristics of a person including:
        Personality
        Attitudes
        Values
        Interests/hobbies
        Lifestyles
        Behavior
        Determine how your product or service will fit into your target’s lifestyle. How and when will they use the product? What features are most appealing to them? What media do they turn to for information? Do they read the newspaper, search online or attend particular events?
        6. Evaluate your decision
        Once you’ve decided on a target market, be sure to consider these questions:
        Are there enough people that fit my criteria?
        Will my target really benefit from my product/service? Will they see a need for it?
        Do I understand what drives my target to make decisions?
        Can they afford my product/service?
        Can I reach them with my message? Are they easily accessible?
        Don’t break your target down too far! Remember, you can have more than one niche market. Consider if your marketing message should be different for each niche market. If you can reach both niches effectively with the same message, then maybe you have broken down your market too far. Also, if you find that there are only 50 people that fit all of your criteria, maybe you should reevaluate your target. The trick is to find that perfect balance.

          "Small businesses" is very broad... essentially every potential customer will be a small business - unless you feel like you are going to target larger brands or individual consumers. I think though that breaking it down into sub services will help you to identify targets. example Site designs, logos, print, animation work, etc

            In every business the main motive is to target the audience to achieve great profits and business markets, so every business owner should try to go for target audience as you a re a graphic designer so you should go for target only for software and animation field.

                The target audience is something that depends from person to person and from their business to business. It is also very important to make sure that one understands the different types of the audience and understand that they are the ones who are very important to us.
                So make sure you spend as much as time possible.

                      Before anything else, it's important that choose on your audience. Many counselors create the blunder of considering that they can help everyone - with the outcome that they end up assisting no-one. When you specialise - by providing what you do to a particular industry area - other individuals understand you as an professional. This creates you more attractive!

                        Yes you can start with those small businesses who wants to have a really good site. You can add this up to your portfolio or even get their help for referrals. everybody starts small (except for the few lucky ones of course) and you have to work your way up with the big boys.

                          I think this is excellent advice. Zeroing in on specific categories of graphic design will help you showcase the work you already have and help you get a better idea of who your current customers are. It will also help you decide who you want your future customers to be. Perhaps you are bored with logo design and would rather branch out into motion graphics or something of that nature.

                          I know some graphic designers that specialize in web design, some in book covers, some in corporate logs, etc.
