  • Keeping good employees

We are having a problem keeping some of our good employees at our pizza franchise. We pay better than most and we recognize that this is not a career job for the employees but we are having a higher turnover than most of the other franchises - any ideas?

I do not think franchises are any different than other small businesses if you treat people with respect and pay them well you will keep them. However, I would think that your business has a lot of turnover, I would check to see what your competitors are paying and also find out where the employees are going to is it one of your competitors or another industry

I agree though I think there is just inherent natural turnover in the pizza businesses and throwing more money at it will not help

I agree that throwing money at it may not help but if you are paying below what your competitors are and you are relatively close together if you could work at one pizza place for $1 more an hour than I am sure you would.

              Hello
The baby boomers are retiring. The labor shortage is coming. This means that management will have to work harder to attract and keep top quality employees. But, where do you start? Here are ten tips to help managers keep quality employees:
              1. Make sure your organization’s leaders have integrity. Often, the integrity of an organization’s leaders (or lack thereof) is revealed by how employees are treated. Many of the companies identified as today’s employers of choice are being led by CEO’s with a passion for taking care of their employees as people.
              2. The lifeblood of leadership is trust. Employees cannot be lead by managers they don’t trust. In order to gain employees’ trust, you need to be open, fair, honest and consistent. As the saying goes, people don’t leave jobs, they leave bad supervisors.
              3. Employees want and need regular recognition and rewards. Be generous with your praise and make sure the rewards you provide are meaningful to your employees.

I have to agree trust is an issue but to build trust you have to be truthful with your employess. Lying to your employees can kill trust faster than a sprinter in the Olympic games. If an employee does a good job let him or her know. If they do a poor job let them know and show them how to correct their mistakes. Honesty is always the best policy without it you can't give good customer service.

The physical layout of your workspace and the quality of the work-related equipment available to use play a key role in keeping employees happy. Make sure that the workspace is pleasant, decorated, and maintained. Even small things, such as applying a fresh coat of paint, can make a difference. Moreover, you can’t expect your employees to take pride in their work if you don’t supply them with the proper tools and equipment to get the job done.

                              Re: Keeping good employees

Something I am so surprised that has not been mentioned in this thread when you want to work on employee retention is actually talking to the current employees to find out what they would like to see changed in their work environment. Also for the employees that leave have them fill out an exit question poll or conduct a quick interview to find out why they are leaving and what would have helped make them stay. Once you gather all the feedback and research from the actual source of the dilemma you should be able to improve drastically and reduce employee turnover.
