  • global sourcing

I've been in tech for nearly 7 years, and my company is rabidly outsourcing work to India while talented US people at this company leave in droves. How big of a threat is global sourcing? Is this the eventual end of IT work in the states, and should I instead study air conditioning repair? (I'm not being facetious either - I'm starting to think in terms of 'what can I do that can't be shipped overseas', since most things in IT can now be done remotely by people in India for a fraction of the price of paying an American.)Thoughts?

        Re: global sourcing

Global sourcing is a term used to describe practice of sourcing from the global market for goods and services across geopolitical boundaries. Global sourcing often aims to exploit global efficiencies in the delivery of a product or service. These efficiencies include low cost skilled labor, low cost raw material and other economic factors like tax breaks and low trade tariffs.

Common examples of globally-sourced products or services include: labor-intensive manufactured products produced using low-cost Chinese labor, call centers staffed with low-cost English speaking workers in the Philippines and India, and IT work performed by low-cost programmers in India and Eastern Europe. While these examples are examples of Low-cost country sourcing, global sourcing is not limited to low-cost countries.

They say that global outsourcing is a threat but let's just look to the brighter side, if there's no outsourcing firms how can small and medium businesses that lacks experienced staffs and professionals grow and expand? They need the help of outsourcing company because they still can't hire expensive and experienced staff to do specific work for their company. When they expand that's the time they can decide whether they will hire an in-house staff or still continue to outsource. Of course who's not in for cheaper labour cost, high quality and efficient outcome right?
