  • How essential do you think strong selling skills are?

Lets face it. There are businesses that do not require a huge element of strong or pushy selling. If you are really a professional and hang your shingle and develop a great looking website with your favorite colors, nice graphics and beautiful music - people will eventually find you and if you treat them real nice then they will want to do business with you. Right?

    Sorry, don't agree.

If you are a professional, like almost any specialty in medicine where the demand far exceeds the supply, all you have to do is show up.

Outside the Internet, selling is paramount. It's what makes the business world go around. However, good selling is not pushy selling. The best sales people are "counselor sellers" where they first get a good understanding of the prospect's goals and objectives before offering alternative solutions. Referrals, word of mouth and, as you say, treating people right are key elements.

However, just putting up a website will not work. In other words, "If you build it, they will not come."

The purpose of a website is two-fold: 1) To capture information about web visitors so they can be subsequently marketed to. 2) To make a sale.

Most web sites are just brochures. They do neither of the above and they don't sell. If you don't do some basic things in terms of marketing and optimizing your site's online and offline factors, people will never find you.

I do agree to it to a certain point but then there are instances where sales technique matters the most in this professional and competitive world. There are many other to grab away your chance and to keep it to yourself you should be showing some constant growth in your proficiency. Sometimes it just the sales that matter so the profits gained would make it to the secondary objective. After all marketing and sales is not all about profits.

I think a lot of life is about selling. We are constantly trying to sell ourselves, our ideas, our products, our friends / family etc. etc. The stronger you are at recognizing how much of life really is about the sell the more you are usually able to accomplish. With all that being said there are very ethical and non-abrasive ways to sell and it is more about the approach and follow through of the sale then the actual sale a lot of times. Good, proven sales skills are handy and can be utilized in almost every facet of life.

in addition to needing sales people, you can't just build a site and leave it out there for people to discover. the website needs to be built according to search engine standards and will need to be marketed, other wise it'll be a stagnant site sitting in cyber-purgatory

Strong selling skills does not necessarily mean that you need to hover and actively convince customers to buy from you. Actually, it is being able to understand the very essence of your business and being able to choose the right marketing strategy to go along with it. It's not a matter of how pushy you are, but how clever you are.
